With the 2023 college football season officially coming to a close Monday night, we can now fully set our sights to 2024. Even with the expansion to a 12-team College Football Playoff format, the road to success will be much more difficult for Penn State football in the new-look Big Ten. And the path to the postseason is now even more challenging for the Nittany Lions, as Big Ten rival Ohio State just added a transfer portal commitment from top SEC RB Quinshon Judkins.

Ohio State lands former Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins

The transfer portal entry window officially closed on January 2. But with over 1,500 names still uncommitted, there’s plenty of news still churning out of the portal.

One of the bigger names to hit the transfer portal this winter is now officially heading to Big Ten country. As the clock ticked down on the National Championship Monday night, former Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins announced that he was committing to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Judkins took the college football world by storm in 2022, earning All-SEC first-team honors and being named as the national true freshman of the year by several outlets. As a sophomore, Judkins rushed for over 1,100 yards and 15 scores in 2023. This includes 34 carries for 106 yards and a receiving touchdown against Penn State football in the Peach Bowl on December 30.

Quinshon Judkins will join a new-look Ohio State offense that is clearly aiming to make waves in the first year of an expanded Big Ten conference. Last week, the Buckeyes landed a transfer portal commitment from Pennsylvania native and former Kansas State QB Will Howard. Howard was originally projected to land out West with Big Ten newcomer USC.

Penn State football is also making moves in the transfer portal

Ohio State isn’t the only Big Ten team making a splash in the transfer portal. James Franklin and Penn State football have also made their mark in the portal over the last week as well. Of course, the headline-grabbing commitment came from a former Ohio State player, as ex-Buckeye WR Julian Fleming joined the Nittany Lions roster on January 3.

Penn State football landed a commitment from another former top Pennsylvania prospect over the weekend, as Wisconsin OL Nolan Rucci announced he is coming back to the Keystone State. Both Fleming and Rucci were the No. 1 in-state prospects in their respective cycles who slipped out of James Franklin’s grasp during their initial recruitments.

And the Nittany Lions may not be done just yet. Penn State is still the favorite to land former Georgia CB AJ Harris. The spring semester at University Park started on Monday, so we should know soon if Harris will be joining a depleted Penn State defensive backfield.

Penn State football won’t have to wait long for the 2024 Big Ten schedule to get interesting. The Nittany Lions face UCLA at home and USC on the road in early October. Penn State then plays at Wisconsin, at home against Ohio State, and at home versus national runner-up Washington in a difficult three-game stretch starting on October 26.
