Throughout spring ball and following the Blue/White game, head coach James Franklin emphasized two positions his team needs help with: defensive tackle and wide receiver. Luckily for the Nittany Lions, a former four-star Penn State defensive tackle target from the class of 2022 just hit the transfer portal. Now, Penn State football may want to pursue Shone Washington, a former Penn State target and one-year Georgia Bulldog.

On Saturday, the 2023 college football transfer portal opened for the second time. Now, Penn State football has limited time to address its two needs — wide receiver and defensive tackle — ahead of the 2023 season. While the Nittany Lions have some solid starters in place right now, James Franklin says he wants more depth and competition in the room; Shone Washington could add precisely that.

As a recruit in the class of 2022, Shone Washington was a Penn State defensive tackle target; he was ranked as the No. 28 defensive lineman and No. 18 player in Louisiana according to the ESPN 300 rankings. Despite his offer from Penn State football, Shone Washington decided to stay close to home and play in the SEC for Kirby Smart’s national champion Georgia Bulldogs. Following Georgia’s second-straight national title-winning season, the former Penn State defensive line target decided to hit the portal and could be a top target for James Franklin ahead of summer camp.

Washington has what Penn State needs

As a transfer portal recruit, Washington is graded as a three-star recruit and boasts precisely what Penn State football is looking for: a massive 6-foot-4, 309-pound frame and the aggression to match. With his size and experience, expect the Nittany Lions to keep a close eye on Shone Washington; perhaps he can become the next great Penn State defensive tackle if he transfers to Happy Valley this spring.
