Penn State football has achieved a new ranking in the latest Big Ten power rankings, securing a spot in the top 3 ahead of the 2023 season. The Nittany Lions, led by the emerging sophomore quarterback Drew Allar and more, are building upon their remarkable 11-2 campaign last fall. Their season concluded with a victory in the Rose Bowl against the PAC-12 Champions, Utah, on January 2nd. With their recent success, the Nittany Lions are now poised to progress further.

Who is Penn State football ranked behind in the new Big Ten power rankings?

According to the recently released Big Ten power rankings by On3, Penn State football secures the No. 3 position in the conference. The Nittany Lions find themselves ranked below the conference powerhouses, Michigan and Ohio State, both of which made the College Football Playoff last season.

Presently, Penn State football is on a losing streak against both the Wolverines and Buckeyes as they approach the 2023 season. Throughout this decade, Penn State has only defeated Michigan once, in 2020, and their last victory against Ohio State dates back to the memorable White Out game in 2016. That game solidified the Nittany Lions’ reputation as one of the premier programs in college football, something that Penn State had not been during the sanctioned seasons from 2012-2015.

This year, Penn State will travel to Columbus to face Ohio State, but they will have the advantage of playing Michigan at home for their annual “Stripe Out” game in mid-November.

If Penn State football can split the results of these two games, there is a strong possibility that this year’s Nittany Lions will conclude the regular season with an impressive 11-1 record. Such an achievement could potentially secure their position in the Big Ten title game or bolster their resume for a historic first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.
