Another day, another top ranking for the 2023 Penn State football running back room. We can’t help but praise the Nittany Lions’ incredible RB room, featuring talents like Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen, Trey Potts, and more. In a recent ranking by 247 Sports, Penn State’s running back room secured a spot in the top three, landing at an impressive No. 2. Now, let’s break it down.

Penn State football running back behind the Michigan Wolverines

Despite the presence of two highly acclaimed running backs and the addition of experienced Big Ten player Trey Potts from Minnesota, the Penn State football running back room falls short of being ranked as the best in the nation. Surprisingly, it is not even considered the top running back room in the Big Ten. According to 247 Sports, that distinction belongs to the Michigan Wolverines.

To be fair, it’s difficult to dispute the Wolverines’ top ranking. Michigan boasts the return of a potential Heisman Trophy candidate and one of the most impressive second-string running backs in the country, Donovan Edwards.

When their primary running back, Corum, was sidelined with an injury last season, Edwards stepped up and showcased his talent by rushing for over 200 yards against Ohio State and nearly 190 yards in the Big Ten title game.

As long as either one or both of these exceptional players remain with the team in Ann Arbor, which is likely to end after the 2023 season, the Wolverines will continue to have the nation’s best running back room, according to national media.

Nittany Lions come in at No. 2 nationally

Following closely behind the Michigan Wolverines in the recent rankings by 247 Sports is the Penn State football running back room. The Nittany Lions possess a formidable duo in Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, who perfectly complement each other in the backfield. Adding to their strength, Penn State recently acquired additional depth and experience through the transfer portal with the inclusion of Trey Potts, a long-time Minnesota RB and Pennsylvania native who has always been a devoted Penn State fan.

The recognition from 247 Sports is not the only accolade for the Penn State football running back room. In On3’s rankings, the Nittany Lions secured the No. 3 spot, trailing only Alabama and, once again, Michigan.

An interesting observation is that the No. 3 team on 247’s list is the Ohio State Buckeyes, indicating that the Big Ten East division boasts the top three running back rooms in the nation heading into the 2023 season. This highlights the fierce competition within Penn State’s division and underscores the vital role of the Nittany Lions’ run defense this upcoming fall.
