The Penn State football team was able to grind out a tough road one on Saturday. Defeating the Illinois Fighting Illini 30-13. The Penn State defense shut down Illinois causing 5 turnovers in the game. But one of the biggest concerns from the game was how the Nittany Lions offensive line looked during today’s game. Last season it was a strength that allowed Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen to shine. But during the game, the offensive line struggled against Illinois defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton. James Franklin commented on how his offensive line played after the game.

It was a sloppy performance for the Penn State offense against Illinois. Drops from the wide receivers didn’t help. But one of the more surprising aspects of the game was how little success the offensive line had in crucial moments of this game. Drew Allar didn’t have much time and the running backs had slim lanes to run through.

After the game, James Franklin said, “Yeah I think the fact that we were able to play a bunch of guys has been good for us, we’re going to need that. But, I think it’ll be interesting watching this tape with not just our o-line but our tight ends as well to get a better feel for it. But that’s a front that there were a lot of conversations about coming into the season. They also played some 5 and 6-man defensive line fronts against us as well. I thought they had some pretty good scheme ideas as well. But it will be really good film for us to evaluate and coach off of. You have to give them credit they’re good on their defense line but it’ll be really good film for us to watch.”

Returning Home

Walking out of a Big Ten West stadium with a win is never easy. The Nittany Lions will play another Big Ten West team this weekend as the Iowa Hawkeyes come to town. However, it will be the Penn State whiteout game which should give the Penn State football team a huge advantage. James Franklin will look to avenge his loss to Iowa in the 2021 season.
