Recently, Penn State football recruiting has seen some great success, securing commitments from top recruits and earning national attention. The program has landed the 6th-ranked 2024 class and a top-3 2025 class, and is now in the running for the No. 1 recruit in the nation: 2025 quarterback Bryce Underwood from Belleville, MI.

Although the Michigan Wolverines and head coach Jim Harbaugh appear to be in the mix, the Wolverines currently have a crowded QB situation with the commitment of five-star 2024 quarterback Jadyn Davis. Penn State football has been named a ‘school to watch’ in Underwood’s recruitment by On3, which could be significant for the program.

Underwood is a 2025 prospect from Belleveille High School, around 20 minutes from Ann Arbor. He recently visited Ohio State Buckeyes, who also appear to be in good shape on that front, but his top interest for the time being lies in Ann Arbor. However, given Michigan’s current QB situation, Underwood may choose to play elsewhere.

On3 has named Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, and Penn State football as four programs that appear to have a good amount of interest from Underwood thus far — all four are ‘schools to watch’ in his recruitment. Penn State currently has no quarterback commits in the 2024 or 2025 classes, so if the program manages to land Underwood, securing a QB in the 2024 class will become less of a priority, and the coaching staff will be able to focus on the team’s other needs.

Although On3 has yet to give anyone five stars in the 2025 class, Underwood is expected to earn his fifth star upon re-evaluation; Underwood is also expected to visit Michigan again over the summer and is reportedly working on other summer visits. Penn State will need to secure one of these summertime visits if it wants to remain one of the top contenders in Underwood’s recruitment; for the time being, the Nittany Lions appear to be in a good early spot, which is great news for the program’s future recruiting hopes — where Underwood goes, many elite recruits will likely follow.
