Penn State football is considered by many to be a trendy pick for the College Football Playoff (CFP) this season. Whether discussed as a darkhorse or an outright contender, the Nittany Lions are included by most in the discussion of teams that can make the CFP in 2023. This is reflected in the odds market as well. Across several sports books, Penn State consistently has some of the best odds to make the Playoff this fall. But which sports book gives the Nittany Lions the best chance to with the national championship?
Who gives Penn State football the best odds to win the CFP?
Penn State has been making the rounds as a consistent top-10 team in preseason polls released in recent weeks. But there’s another spot where the Nittany Lions are a consistent presence in the top 10 nationally – the CFP odds market. The website Vegas Insider keeps track of the betting lines across several popular sports books. Here’s where Penn State football stands in terms of odds to win the national championship, rankings from best to worst:
- Fanduel: +2,000 (8th)
- Caesars: +2,200 (9th)
- Pointsbet: +2,200 (9th)
- BetMGM: +2,500 (10th)
There isn’t much variation in these lines, and the odds haven’t changed significantly over the last several weeks. Across these outlets, Penn State’s odds shuffle based on how the books view the Nittany Lions in relation to Florida State and Texas to win the CFP. Indeed, the Nittany Lions and the Longhorns are among the two most likely teams to make the CFP for the first time this fall.
However, the obvious catch for Penn State is that Ohio State and Michigan both have top 4 odds to win the title across all these sportsbooks. While Penn State has one of its most talented teams in the last decade and can realistically contend for a Big Ten championship and CFP berth, it’ll have to beat Michigan and/or Ohio State to do so. That’s no small feat, but soon enough, we’ll find out that the 2023 Nittany Lions are up to the task.
