This morning, Steve Wiltfong — the top insider at 247 Sports — logged a new crystal ball for Michael Van Buren to commit to Oregon. Brian Dohn, another top insider, did the same; this is not good news for Penn State football recruiting, seeing as Van Buren has been Franklin’s top 2024 quarterback target and was considered a strong Penn State lean not too long ago.

Penn State football recruiting is losing its grip on Michael Van Buren

Michael Van Buren is a 247 Sports Composite four-star quarterback in the class of 2024. Van Buren has been a top target for Penn State football recruiting for some time, though, as of late, Oregon has been making a strong push for his commitment. Recently, the Ducks took the lead according to the On3 RPM; on Wednesday morning, two new crystal balls were logged for Van Buren to commit to Oregon.

This is bad news for Penn State football, especially since the Nittany Lions are the only major Big Ten program that has not locked down a major quarterback target in the 2024 class thus far. Michigan has itself a composite five-star, and Ohio State has a highly-ranked four-star.

This news is not great for Penn State football, though it was not unexpected, either. The Nittany Lions have been targeting a number of regional quarterbacks in the class as of late, and yesterday, Franklin offered a four-star quarterback from Florida — all of these QB moves appear to be in direct response to Van Buren’s momentum changing hands.

There is still some time left for the Penn State Nittany Lions to turn things around

Michael Van Buren has an upcoming Penn State football recruiting official visit in June, which will likely end up being the Nittany Lions’ final shot at making a good impression and regaining the lead for the talented four-star quarterback. His commitment date is set for early July, so his recruitment is far from over, though things are not looking up for Penn State football right now. Van Buren’s top-3 remaining schools are Oregon, Penn State, and Maryland.
