Will the Penn State game plan change drastically if Drew Allar doesn’t play?

James Franklin has reiterated multiple times this week that he believes Drew Allar will be able to play against Michigan State. But if not, how does that impact the Nittany Lions game plan?

Something the Penn State football never wanted to see this season happened last Saturday. When star quarterback Drew Allar suffered an undisclosed injury. The team was able to handle business throughout the rest of the game without Allar. Due to the collective effort of Beau Pribula, Kaytron Allen, and Nick Singleton the Nittany Lions found a way to win. All week James Franklin has sent the same message to the media that Drew Allar will be ready to go this week. But, how late in the week can Penn State shift their offensive game plan to prepare Beau Pribula if needed?

James Franklin explains Drew Allar’s availability for game planning

All eyes are on the season finale for Penn State football. They play in a unique setting at Ford Field home of the Detroit Lions against Michigan State. This game comes one day after the Detroit Lions will host the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day. But the biggest question surrounding this week’s game is will Drew Allar be able to play? James Franklin believes he will but if Allar is unavailable how late can the Nittany Lions shift their game plan?

Franklin explained after practice on Tuesday night. He said, “Yeah, I think your point is a fair one. That if we were game-planning for Drew [Allar] to be the primary quarterback it would be a little bit different than if we were preparing for Beau [Pribula] to be the primary quarterback. We would emphasize different things. But that’s why it’s good when you guys asked me before I said that really, you know our model and plan doesn’t need to change based on the information we have right now.”

We expect Drew to go

Those were the words that James Franklin used during his media availability on Monday. “We expect Drew to go,” Franklin said when speaking about Allar’s health ahead of the Michigan State game. He obviously backed that up on Tuesday when speaking about the information they have. But I would doubt we see Allar as much of a runner if he does play. It will be interesting to see if the Nittany Lions mix in Beau Pribula for some plays considering how well he performed against Rutgers on Saturday.
