Maryland planning all-stadium ‘Gold Out’ for Penn State football

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. That appears to be the case the next time Penn State football hits the road.

Penn State football took its first loss of the season on Saturday in Columbus against Ohio State. The season is not over, but the Nittany Lions will have to win out if they want to have a chance at making the Big Ten Championship game and College Football Playoff. Before facing a do-or-die contest with Michigan on November 11, James Franklin and the Nittany Lions will have to take care of business against Indiana this weekend and at Maryland on November 4.

And apparently, the Terrapins are going to pull out all the stops to try and prevent the Nittany Lions from getting to the Michigan game with everything to play for. This week, Maryland announced plans for a “Gold Out” when Penn State comes to College Park in two weeks

Maryland plans “Gold Out” for Penn State

A few weeks ago, Maryland introduced a new jersey to go along with its “Terps” script helmets. The Terrapins have gone back to the script Terps after multiple decades with the Maryland state flag on their helmets. Now, Maryland is trying something else new. On Monday, the university called for an all-stadium “Gold Out” for the game against Penn State football.

Everyone probably remembers the famous “Black Out” game back in 2019, when Maryland canceled Friday classes in anticipation of the game. A 59-0 loss for the Terrapins and Penn State students invading the Maryland student section during the 4th quarter is still one of the funniest images on the internet.

But how many Maryland fans own gold Terrapins gear? It shouldn’t matter too much anyway, as usually the stadium is 40-50% Penn State fans for these games in College Park.

Is this game really a rivalry?

The Maryland crowd apparently seems juiced for this matchup, but is Penn State-Maryland actually a rivalry game?

Geographically speaking, the term may be correct. The teams often compete for recruits within the DC/Maryland/Virginia area (DMV). Penn State football has played Maryland 46 times, which is 4th most against any team.

The Nittany Lions hold a 38-3-1 record against the Terrapins since 1943. Two of those wins for Maryland have happened in the last decade, with a one-point win in 2014 during James Franklin’s first year in Happy Valley. The second was in 2020 during the COVID season.

Penn State football is currently on a two-game win streak in the series. The only loss in College Park came back in 1961. Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, Maryland has hosted Penn State three times in College Park. The Terps have been outscored 156-17 in those games. So, use the word “rivalry” loosely in this series.

This year’s game will take place on November 4th at 3:30 pm ET on Fox.
