After an entire offseason of waiting, the Drew Allar era of Penn State football officially got underway Saturday night against West Virginia. The result was about just as good as anyone could have expected or hoped for the sophomore QB. Allar impressed the Nittany Lion faithful with big throw after big throw, and now he is starting to pick up the honors. This morning, Penn State QB Drew Allar was awarded the Big Ten Player of the Week honors for Week 1.

Drew Allar looked like a former five-star prospect in his first career start against West Virginia Saturday night. The 19-year-old lit up the Mountaineer defense as well as the scoreboard. Allar connected on 21 of 29 of his throws, going for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The story of the night for Allar was the deep ball. The Penn State QB connected on 9 passes of over 15 yards, totaling 239 yards in the process. Two of his scores, including a 72-yard bomb the KeAndre Lambert-Smith on the fourth offensive play from scrimmage, came on these deep balls as well.

Allar has received high praise since his first start. Some have likened the performance to the first career start of Penn State football legend Kerry Collins. Others have compared Allar’s pocket presence and mobility to that of Josh Allen.

But as of Tuesday morning, Penn State QB Drew Allar can add his first official honor of the 2023 season to the list. This morning, Allar was awarded the Big Ten Player of the Week on offense for his performance against West Virginia.

“I mean, that’s really cool to win that type of award,” Allar said when asked about winning Big Ten Player of the Week this morning. “But we always talk about with team success, comes individual success. And I think that’s a credit to the whole team…I’m not worried about the individual accolades at all. I’m just worried about the team success.”
