Is this the toughest three game stretch for Penn State football?

We will learn a lot about the Penn State football team over the next three games of the season. Is this the toughest three game stretch the Nittany Lions will face in 2023?

Penn State football, Michigan, Schedule
Penn State running back Nick Singleton celebrates after scoring a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the first half of an NCAA football game against Indiana Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, in State College, Pa. The Nittany Lions won, 33-24.

One of the trending topics in the Penn State football community currently is the strength of schedule. A major concern for the Nittany Lions is if they lose to Michigan will a 10-2 record amount to a New Year’s Six bowl game? It’s hard to imagine it will at this current point in the season. In fact, in the most recent bowl projections Penn State is on the outside looking in for a NY6 bowl game. But one thing that can be argued, if the Nittany Lions can win the next three games their strength of schedule will certainly increase.

Is this the toughest three game stretch for Penn State football?

Over the next three weekends, the Penn State football team will go on the road to face a 5-3 Maryland team then host an 8-0 Michigan team, and a 6-2 Rutgers team. Now, I know what you’re thinking, Maryland…Rutgers? Well, Maryland although they are on a three-game losing streak will always try and give Penn State their best shot. The Nittany Lions have struggled on the road this season and the offense has been dreadful in these games.

Then, if the Nittany Lions beat Maryland they turn their attention to the biggest game of the season. At home against one of, if not the best team in the country, the Michigan Wolverines. Penn State was embarrassed by this team last year and will look to keep their Big Ten East and College Football Playoff rankings alive with a massive upset.

Finally, regardless if they win or lose they return to a much improved Rutgers team. If the Nittany Lions lose to Michigan, how invested will the players be in this game? If they beat Michigan, can they rebound their emotions from the week before and avoid a flat start against a very talented defense? The next three games will show us a lot about this team and how mentally tough they truly are.
