It was evident during the Peach Bowl that the Penn State football team needed more talent at defensive back. Ole Miss was able to expose the younger corners in the Nittany Lion secondary. As time goes on, Zion Tracy and Cam Miller will continue to improve, but it would be foolish of Penn State not to add more talent in that room. Thankfully, the transfer portal allows each team to upgrade as needed. James Franklin may be close to landing a signature piece of this transfer portal class, as sources indicate that the Nittany Lions are currently hosting top-ranked former Georgia defensive back, AJ Harris.

AJ Harris officially entered the transfer portal on December 15th. As a defensive back, it would make sense that Harris would follow former Georgia defensive backs coach and current Syracuse head coach Fran Brown to western New York. However, the Penn State football team made a late push and now has earned a visit from Harris as he continues to seek options in the transfer portal. Reports that Harris is on campus today have been confirmed by several other outlets throughout the afternoon, including both On3 and 247Sports.

Harris is regarded as one of the top prospects available in the transfer portal. According to 247sports transfer portal rankings, he is ranked as the No. 2 cornerback and the No. 7 overall player in the portal. Now, he is looking for a new home ahead of the 2024 season.

What’s Penn State’s connection to Harris?

AJ Harris was recruited as a wide receiver and a cornerback in the 2023 recruiting class. Out of high school, he was ranked as the No. 1 player in Alabama. But once he landed at Georiga, he moved full-time to a defensive back role. He appeared in 7 games for the Bulldogs in his true freshman season and collected 8 tackles.

The Nittany Lions offered Harris in early 2021, so the relationship has already been established. We’ve seen James Franklin circle back with Trey Potts, Julian Fleming, and now AJ Harris. Can the Nittany Lions land this promising defensive back?
