Penn State football recruiting has reached new heights recently. James Franklin and the Nittany Lions pulled in a top-15 recruiting class each of the last two years. Currently, the 2024 class is looking to follow suit. According to 247Sports, Penn State has the No. 12 overall class. A class that is one of the more impressive that James Franklin has put together in recent years just got even more impressive over the weekend. Penn State LB commit Anthony Speca has officially set the all-time tackle record at historic Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School.

Penn State football plays a hard-nosed, unforgiving brand of defense. The term “Linebacker U” still rings true for most Nittany Lion fans.

James Franklin has done a great job at keeping the LBU tradition alive and well. He may have found his next great LB in Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Anthony Speca.

A 3-star recruit and consensus top-15 prospect in Pennsylvania, Speca has been committed to the Nittany Lions since January. Central Catholic announced this week that Speca officially set the all-time program record for tackles. A standout at one of the larger football powers in the Keystone State, the record speaks volumes about Speca’s talent and potential.

“Can’t say thank you enough to my coaches, teammates, and the players before me who have set the standard. Love this school and love my team,” Anthony Speca said on social media in response on Monday.

Nittany Lion commits have seen huge jumps in recruiting rankings

Numerous Penn State football recruits have found themselves on the receiving end of rating bumps over the last several weeks. Most notably, TE Luke Reynolds became the Nittany Lions’ first 5-star in the 2024 cycle, according to the 247Sports rankings.

Anonty Speca could be next in line for a ratings bump, which would be significant for the 2024 class. The only other LB currently in the Nittany Lions’ 2024 class is Kari Jackson, who is also a 3-star prospect per 247Sports. Jackson is rated slightly lower than Speca, but both are very promising prospects.

You would have to believe that James Franklin is looking to target more LB prospects for this class as signing day rapidly approaches. Regardless, Anthony Speca is a standout prospect, and a player Penn State football fans should keep an eye on.
