CHICAGO, IL — So far, during Penn State’s incredible run at the program’s first-ever Big Ten title, the Nittany Lions have seen some incredible moments on the court. On Sunday, Penn State basketball could break a Big Ten tournament record with a victory over the 1-seed Purdue Boilermakers in the Big Ten Championship game.

Penn State could break Big Ten tournament record

No Big Ten team has been seeded as low as Penn State and win the Big Ten tournament. Heading into the tournament, Penn State was ranked as a 10-seed — the lowest seed to ever win the Big Ten tournament was the Michigan Wolverines in 2017-18, when the eventual national title runners-up made their own miracle run. Still, Michigan was ranked as an 8-seed, meaning the Lions would become the new lowest-ranked team to win the tournament.

Now, after three close wins over higher-rated teams (Illinois, Northwestern, and Indiana), the Penn State Nittany Lions are headed to the Big Ten title game. On the other sideline will be the 1-seed Purdue Boilermakers, who are coming off of a huge win over Ohio State that advanced them to the title game just before Penn State’s semifinal game tipped-off.

This Penn State basketball team already has an underdog mentality — a win over Purdue in the title game to hang the program’s first-ever Big Ten Championship banner would solidify this ‘why not us?’ image that the Nittany Lions have already established over the past week. Now, at 3:30 PM (EST), Penn State has a shot at making program history and breaking a Big Ten tournament record.
