Penn State football recruiting is poised for an eventful weekend, though the outcome of it remains uncertain. The team’s primary recruiting target, four-star quarterback Michael Van Buren, who holds the position of the Nittany Lions’ top QB recruit for the 2024 cycle, has rescheduled his commitment date.
Originally planned for early July, Van Buren’s decision is now anticipated to be announced this weekend due to significant developments in his recruitment, particularly with Oregon.
Michael Van Buren announced college decision date, will commit this weekend
Penn State football recruiting initially seemed to have a strong advantage in securing the commitment of four-star quarterback Michael Van Buren. The Nittany Lions had been building considerable momentum, with crystal balls, visits, and other positive signs in their favor.
However, a pivotal visit to Oregon in mid-April brought about a significant shift. The Ducks managed to close the gap and ultimately overtake Penn State in Van Buren’s recruitment. While three schools—Oregon, Penn State, and Maryland—are currently in contention, it is widely anticipated that Van Buren will choose Oregon. The young quarterback’s commitment date has now been scheduled for this Sunday afternoon, according to On3.
Why is Van Buren important for Penn State football recruiting?
Currently, among the Big Ten East powerhouses, the Penn State Nittany Lions are the only team without a highly regarded quarterback commitment in their 2024 recruiting class. Michigan boasts Jadyn Davis, a five-star prospect, while Ohio State has the highly touted four-star Air Noland. Consequently, it is crucial for Penn State to secure their own prized quarterback recruit.
Even if Michael Van Buren, as expected, chooses Oregon, the Nittany Lions have a few other options within the 2024 recruiting class. Two notable names being discussed as potential replacements are Tyler Cherry, a four-star prospect, and Samaj Jones, also a four-star recruit. Both players are highly regarded regional targets and would be valuable additions to Penn State’s 2024 class.
