For the Penn State football team, National Signing Day went as expected. Sometimes that can be described as boring in the college football world. But for Nittany Lion fans, know the strength of James Franklin is his recruiting. 25 commits and all 25 signed on National Signing Day without an issue. It was a big day for every college football team around the country too. While players were signing, the Nittany Lion community saw an interesting quote from former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry, who took a shot at his former school.

Did Brent Pry take a shot at the Penn State football team on NSD?

Penn State football focuses on the things they can control. On National Signing Day that is ensuring that they kept the 2024 recruiting class intact. While James Franklin spoke to each signee he used the word “low maintenance” to describe many of their recruiting processes. This is amazing considering the world of NIL and the stress that can add to this process.

But as that was going on, he and Penn State caught a stray comment from former defensive coordinator and current Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry. While speaking with Keylen Adams a 2024 4-star wide receiver Pry said, “All them over schools came calling. The Ohio Staters, the Nittany Cryin’s…” An interesting comment from someone who worked with James Franklin so closely for years.

Manny Diaz style fit Penn State more than Brent Pry’s

It’s ironic for Brent Pry to take a shot at Penn State. Remember when Pry was in State College and he made the decision to play Koa Farmer over Micah Parsons in 2018? His style of defense did not fit Penn State very well, never took any risks and was more of a bend-don’t-break style.

That’s why Manny Diaz was a breath of fresh air. He was aggressive, blitzed all of the time, and forced a lot of turnovers. With Diaz off to Duke, I believe Tom Allen will be able to coach the defense with the same level of intensity as Diaz did.
