What comes to mind when you think ‘Penn State Nittany Lions?’ For many, it’s Joe Paterno, James Franklin, the Penn State White Out game, Beaver Stadium, Happy Valley, and more. Still, for TV Networks, they think about the money; and when it comes to Penn State football, there’s plenty of it to go around. Heading into the 2023 season, James Franklin, Drew Allar, and the rest of the Penn State Nittany Lions will be looking for a Big Ten title and more; however, from a network perspective, they are hopeful that PSU will remain among the most-watch teams in college football.

Penn State was among the most-watched teams in college football in 2022

During Penn State’s incredible 11-2 season in 2022, the Nittany Lions were among the most-watched teams in college football. Penn State football ranked in an average over 3.05 million viewers per game during the 12-game regular season — this ranks the Nittany Lions in the top-10 nationally at No. 9. Additionally, Penn State’s 3+ million average viewership was the third-most in the Big Ten conference behind the Ohio State Buckeyes (5.8M) and the Michigan Wolverines (4.87M).

Penn State football also leads in home game attendance

On top of being one of the most-watched teams in college football (on TV), the Penn State Nittany Lions drew an average crowd of over 107,000 in-person fans. On football Saturdays, Nittany Lion fans packed Beaver Stadium, leading to the second-highest average attendance in the sport, only behind the Michigan Wolverines.

In 2023, Penn State will look to maintain its status as one of the most-watched teams in college football — both from your TV at home and in-person at Beaver Stadium.
