Did James Franklin take a shot at Mike Yurcich after MSU win?

Following Penn State’s win over Michigan State, did James Franklin take a shot at Mike Yurcich for the lack of playing both quarterbacks and lack of explosive plays?

The offensive production has looked much better over the past two weeks for Penn State football. Does that indicate that Mike Yurcich was doing a very poor job? Or has Penn State been playing lesser competition the past two weeks? I’m not sure if we will ever know the answer to that. But two things are true, the Nittany Lions have been more explosive and Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen have had more production these past two weeks. But following the Michigan State win, did James Franklin take a subtle jab at Mike Yurcich?

Did James Franklin take a shot at Mike Yurcich after MSU win?

The firing of Penn State football offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich was a major storyline in the 2023 season for the Nittany Lions. After two lackluster performances against Ohio State and Michigan, it was time to move on from Yurcich. Then, there was this rumor that James Franklin broke the news to Bekkem Kritza before his commitment and ahead of the Michigan game that Yurcich would be gone, which Franklin later denied.

But following the 42-0 win over Michigan State it felt like Franklin made a few comments that were praising Ja’Juan Seider and Ty Howle but also a gab at Mike Yurcich. I’ll let you be the judge.

Franklin said, “We were able to play both quarterbacks something that we really wanted to do all year long. But we were able to emphasize the last two weeks…” He later said in his press conference, “…I thought we did some good things tonight emphasizing the tight ends and running backs, I thought we did that the last two weeks. We were able to take some shots as well, and be a bit more explosive…”

Ja’Juan Seider and Ty Howle deserve their flowers

No one knows if Ja’Juan Seider and Ty Howle will get a legitimate shot at the offensive coordinator role at Penn State. But one thing is for sure, they’ve revamped this offense with a quick turnaround. They’ve also helped players like Nick Singleton regain their confidence. At the end of the day, they were tasked with filling a challenging spot with a sputtering offense, but they exceeded expectations capping it off with 586 yards of total offense against Michigan State.
