After an entire offseason of waiting, the Drew Allar era officially got underway in Happy Valley. Allar’s first start went about as well as Penn State football fans could have hoped, as the sophomore lived up to his five-star rating coming out of high school. While the 19-year-old has garnered much praise after his Week 1 performance, apparently, some in the national media still need to see a bit more. In a move that has left many Nittany Lions’ fans scratching their heads, Penn State QB Drew Allar was left outside a recent ranking of the top 10 QBs in college football after Week 1.
First time starter lights up Week 1
Expectations were high for Drew Allar coming into last week’s matchup against West Virginia. And the first-time starter delivered. Allar lit up the scoreboard on Saturday night, throwing for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns in his first game leading the Penn State football program.
Allar received high praise from both the local and national media coming out of Week 1. At home, Allar was compared to Penn State QB legend Kerry Collins in his first start in Happy Valley. The sophomore QB was also named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Penn State QB Drew Allar snubbed from Week 1 QB rankings
But to some, Drew Allar still has work to do. The Penn State QB was not ranked in a list of the top 10 best QBs in college football following Week 1. The list, published by On3 on Thursday, has Caleb Williams as the top QB in the country. Allar came in at No. 12 on the full rankings.
While you really can’t argue with the top of the list, Allar found himself behind several interesting choices. The Penn State QB was behind Shedeur Sanders, who threw for a Colorado-record 510 yards in his first start.
Allar also found himself behind Michigan QB JJ McCarthy, who threw for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns against East Carolina last week. Allar’s performance in Week 1 has sparked somewhat of a heated debate as to who is the best QB in the Big Ten, with both Penn State and Michigan fans rushing to defend their starters.
Drew Allar and Penn State football will be back in action tomorrow against Delaware, with kickoff scheduled for noon.
