It’s no secret that the Penn State football team will be replacing a lot of star talent on both sides of the ball. It will start up front for the Nittany Lions. But James Franklin and Phil Trautwein have prepared themselves for this change through their strong recruiting. But they may need to look towards the transfer portal for this moving forward to fill an immediate need. It appears that the Penn State coaching staff is starting to prepare for the future this week with an offer to Division II OT Alan Herron.

Penn State football offers a quickly rising transfer portal prospect

The Penn State football team officially offered Alan Herron a scholarship on Wednesday afternoon, he announced on social media. In his Twitter/X profile, he states that he is a transfer portal sophomore. Herron is an offensive tackle who entered the transfer portal from Shorter University, a Division II school located in Rome, Georgia.

Alan Herron entered the NCAA transfer portal on November 16th and has become a hot commodity for several Division I schools, receiving 23 offers since he entered the portal, all from FBS schools. He is currently rated as the No. 3 offensive tackle in the transfer portal, according to 247sports.

James Franklin and Penn State football wasted no time with Herron after offering. Multiple outlets are reporting today that the Nittany Lions have set up a visit with the transfer portal OT in early December. Herron is also set to visit Texas Tech and Clemson in the coming weeks.

The Penn State offensive tackles will be different in 2024

Olu Fashanu was a projected first-round draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Now, he has increased his stock even higher ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft. Although he has not officially announced it, the Nittany Lions believe Fashanu is a foregone conclusion to the NFL.

Then, RT Caedan Wallace has a major decision to make over the next couple of weeks. Wallace technically could return to Penn State next season thanks to his COVID-19 eligibility.

But if the Nittany Lions lose both starting OTs, they have players ready in the pipeline. Drew Shelton has played a strong role in significant playing time over the past two seasons. The Nittany Lions are excited for 2023, recruiting class members Chimdy Onoh and J’ven Williams to see what they can do on the field. But adding a player like Alan Herron could bolster the offensive line unit next season.
