It was a relatively quiet spring transfer portal window for Penn State football until the floodgates opened this week. The Nittany Lions have lost eight players in the spring window for the transfer portal, but five of those announcements came within an hour span on Thursday afternoon. The first, and perhaps most significant, loss was rising defensive star King Mack. The sophomore safety is wasting no time, according to new reports, and already has a visit to Alabama set for this weekend.
Ex-Penn State defender set to visit Alabama this weekend
King Mack was a top 100 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. According to 247Sports, Mack was the No. 86 player in the 2023 cycle, he was also listed as the No. 6 safety in his class. From Fort Lauderdale, FL, Mack played his high school football at St. Thomas Aquinas, where he was teammates with former Penn State commit Conrad Hussey.
Mack’s commitment to Penn State was made official on June 30, 2022. He enrolled in May of 2023 and played his true freshman season with the Nittany Lions. Last season he appeared in 13 games and recorded three tackles.
On Thursday, it was announced that Mack was expected to enter the transfer portal. It didn’t take long after the news broke for Mack to set up his first transfer portal visit. Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported Thursday night that Mack will be visiting Alabama this weekend.
The Crimson Tide have already added one of the top safety transfers, Keon Sabb, from Michigan this offseason.
King Mack and Conrad Hussey
Another school that’s worth watching in the battle for King Mack is Florida State. Conrad Hussey was a one-time Nittany Lion commit who ended up flipping his commitment from Penn State to FSU in December 2022. Hussey and Mack were high school teammates at St. Thomas Aquinas so the two pairing up wouldn’t be shocking. But, of course, that assumes that Mack leaves Alabama before committing.
The Nittany Lions also saw WR Malik McClain, RB London Montgomery, OL Golden Israel-Achumba, and RB David Kency enter the transfer portal on Thursday.
