Penn State quarterback Drew Allar (15) walks on the field after the Nittany Lions defeated Delaware, 63-7, during a NCAA football game Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, in State College, Pa.

It’s no surprise to the Penn State community that QB Drew Allar has played very well early this season. Based on what we saw last season, it was easy to tell Allar had all of the traits to be a very good quarterback. Now, that he is the starting QB for the Penn State football team, his confidence is on full display. But it’s not just Penn State fans. Drew Allar is starting to be part of conversations with the best quarterbacks in the country.

Drew Allar is finally getting the national recognition he deserves

After an elite performance in week 1 of the 2023 season where Drew Allar went 21-29 for 325 and 3 touchdown passes, Allar won Big Ten Player of the Week. He followed that up with a strong outing in a game where he didn’t need to be the best player on the field. Against Delaware Allar went 22-26 for 224 and added one touchdown pass. He quietly had a very successful performance in week two. Now, On3 has named Drew Allar as one of the best quarterbacks in the country headed into week 3.

Allar ended up 10th on the list, but we will take it. For someone who has not received much hype, many wanted to see him prove it on the field. So far in the 2023 season, he has done just that, but he faces a new challenge this week.

Allar’s first career road start

Drew Allar will hit the road with the Penn State football team to play in his first road start for his college football career. James Franklin and his coaching staff did a great job preparing Allar for this moment last season. In his first-ever college game at Purdue, Allar was forced into action and delivered. The environment he will face on Saturday at Illinois will be less intimidating in my opinion, but James Franklin believes Allar will be ready for this moment.
