Penn State football suffered its first defeat of the 2023 season Saturday, a crushing 20-12 loss at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes. But James Franklin and the Nittany Lions also suffered a significant loss in the personnel department, losing DE Chop Robinson to injury in the first half. What do we know about the status of the star EDGE rusher coming out of Saturday’s game?

Chop Robinson leaves Ohio State game after scary hit

It was a scary scene when Penn State star EDGE rusher Chop Robinson hit the Horseshoe turf around the 10-minute mark in the second quarter of Saturday’s loss to Ohio State. Robinson was lying on the turf face down for several minutes, visibly in a great deal of discomfort.

While initially unclear what happened to the potential first-round NFL Draft pick, a replay showed that Robinson apparently took a blow to the side of his helmet. The Penn State football star was helped to his feet, but Robinson clearly needed assistance getting to the sideline.

Several minutes later, Robinson was shown being carted off the sideline into the Penn State locker room. He did not return to action, nor was he shown on the TV broadcast for the remainder of the game.

What is the injury status of the Penn State football star?

Very few details emerged about the injury status of Chop Robinson throughout the remainder of Saturday. As halftime approached, Big Noon sideline reporter Jenny Taft had the following update on the star EDGE rusher.

“I know we all watched as Chop Robinson was carted off the field to the locker room,” Taft said. “He remains there now. What I can tell you is just so much emotion under that towel that was draped over his face. I could hear the tears coming from him, and his teammates coming over encouraging him, consoling him, saying that they will continue in his absence.”

That was the last significant update we received on Robinson Saturday. Penn State football coach James Franklin was not asked about the injury in postgame availability.

The next opportunity we’ll have to hear from Franklin will be Tuesday during his weekly press conference. Franklin will likely be asked about Robinson and fellow DE Amin Vanover, who also left the game with an injury, then. It’s important to reiterate that Franklin typically does not comment extensively on injuries unless they are season-ending.

As Penn State football looks to remain in the College Football Playoff hunt, losing Chop Robinson for any extended length of time could be a serious blow. The Nittany Lions face games versus Indiana and at Maryland before a showdown with No. 2 Michigan on November 11.
