The first game of the 2023 college football season for the Penn State football team is almost upon us. We are within the final 6 days until kickoff against West Virginia. The excitement is in the air to see this Nittany Lion squad get to work. In a season where they have high expectations a new starting quarterback and a great offensive line coached by Phil Trautwein. Something that is equally as important as the game itself is the recruiting aspect. Current Penn State commit Jaelyne Matthews has announced he will be in attendance for the first game of the season.

One of the most important commitments in the 2025 Penn State football recruiting class is Jaelyne Matthews. He is a four-star recruit, the No. 1 prospect in New Jersey, and within the top 100 prospects in the 2025 class nationally according to 247sports composite rankings. He made his commitment to Penn State on January 30th, 2023 but has gained national popularity since then. Now, he has announced on social media that he will be in attendance for the West Virginia game.

Out of Toms River, NJ Matthews and Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein have a lot in common. Trautwein was born in Voorhees Township, NJ and that state has been a challenge for Penn State in the past. The Nittany Lions are optimistic that they can keep Matthews committed to Penn State.

Hanging onto Jaelyne Matthews

Although Penn State currently has Matthews as a commit, there is still a long way to go before national signing day in 2024. At 6’5 290 pounds, Matthews is the ideal size of a cornerstone left tackle. James Franklin and Phil Trautwein will need to fend off programs such as Georgia, Texas A&M, Flordia State, Michigan, Miami, Ohio State, Flordia, and Tennessee which is no small task.

If the Nittany Lions can hang on, this could be one of the most prospects that Phil Trautwein has ever landed since joining the Penn State staff.
