James Franklin and the rest of the Penn State football coaching staff have put together an incredible summer in terms of recruiting. The 2024 recruiting class has closed deals with some of its top prospects including Liam Andrews and T.A. Cunningham as the most recent additions. As of August 3rd, 2023, the Nittany Lions have a top-five class in both the 2024 and 2025 recruiting cycles, which is a remarkable accomplishment.
Penn State football currently has a top 5 recruiting class in 2024 & 2025
According to 247sports the Penn State football team currently has a top five recruiting class in both the 2024 and 2025 cycles. In 2024 the Nittany Lions currently sit at 24 hard commits and are led by four-star ATH Quinton Martin who has been named one of the best prospects in the 2024 class committed to a Big Ten team.
The Nittany Lions also have two quick risers in 2024 QB Ethan Grunkemeyer and TE Luke Reynolds who have gone from outside of the top 300 to some of the top prospects at their respected position. If they can add a player like Sione Laulea from the JUCO level to this 2024 class, Penn State could be special next season.
In 2025, the Nittany Lions are led by their first commit of the class OT Jaelyne Matthews who is a four-star recruit. As well as four-star running back KiAndrea Barker and three-star cornerback Omari Gaines. Penn State trails Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, and Oklahoma with Michigan sitting directly behind the Nittany Lions with the 6th overall 2025 recruiting class.
Obviously, there is a lot of work to be done in the 2025 class, but to have the first few prospects have already existing high ratings, makes Penn State a more appealing landing spot for other players.
What are the needs of the Penn State 2025 recruiting class?
The position that Penn State would love to finalize is the quarterback in this cycle. Now, this isn’t an evaluation that needs to be rushed, and nor should it. But, the Nittany Lions have hosted a few quarterbacks that are worth keeping an eye on in the months ahead. But one that they have developed a great relationship with early on is 2025 four-star QB Bekkem Kritza who was on campus this past weekend for the Lasch Bash. He stands at 6’5 and would be an intriguing addition to the QB room.
