Penn State Football Adds Former Boise State Standout To Its Staff

Earlier this week, James Franklin added a new member to his 2023 Penn State football coaching staff: Eric Sachse. Sachse, a former Boise State kicker (2015-2019) will be joining the staff as a special teams analyst and analytics coordinator ahead of a season full of massive expectations for the Nittany Lions this fall.

Who is Eric Sachse?

From his redshirt season in 2015 to a graduate year in 2019, Eric Sachse served as the kicker for the Boise State Broncos — he saw one year as a starter, which came in 2019. That same season, he helped lead the Broncos to a 12-2 season, which concluded with a Mountain West Championship win and a No. 22 ranking. The Broncos lost to Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl that same season.

Sasche scored 103 points for Boise State in 2019, going 61/62 on extra points and 14/17 on field goals — his longest make was a 41-yarder. He also brings coaching experience from the SEC, where he served as an analyst on Brian Harsin’s Auburn Tiger coaching staff in 2021.

Sachse to help with special teams

After a solid (yet occasionally rocky) special teams season in 2022, Penn State football could use all hands on deck heading into a new season this fall. The Nittany Lions have some new talent developing and some returning starters, so there is a good shell for Sasche and Co. to work with this year. Personally, I like the hire — a former kicker turned coach that brings previous Power Five experience is never a bad thing.
