Today, Penn State football is excited to host Maxwell Roy, a major four-star recruit from the class of 2025. Hailing from St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Roy is an exceptional defensive tackle who has attracted significant attention from numerous colleges.

As a prominent in-state target, his visit to the Penn State campus is of great importance as Head Coach James Franklin and his coaching staff aim to secure his commitment, further enhancing their already impressive 2025 recruiting class, which ranks among the top three in the nation. Throughout the day, the coaching staff will engage with Roy, showcasing the program’s strengths and making a compelling case for him to join the Nittany Lions.

Penn State football is hosting a major four-star recruit today

In notable Penn State football recruiting news, Maxwell Roy, an impressive defensive lineman from the 2025 class, is currently visiting State College. Standing at an impressive 6-foot-5 and weighing 265 pounds, this rising high school junior has garnered significant attention from both regional and national schools. Given his status as an in-state prospect, the Nittany Lions have expressed a considerable amount of interest in him right from the start.

According to ON3’s rankings, Roy is ranked as one of the top 70 recruits in the 2025 class. Specifically, he holds the No. 69 spot nationally, No. 9 among defensive linemen, and is the second-ranked player in the state of Pennsylvania. The Recruiting Prediction Machine indicates that Penn State football is currently one of the top three teams in contention for his commitment. Presently, Penn State is trailing the current leader, Rutgers, by a margin of 2.3%. However, today’s visit could potentially alter the situation if the coaching staff can effectively showcase their program to Roy.

How the 2025 class looks so far

The 2025 Penn State football recruiting class has made an impressive start, currently ranking as one of the best in the nation at No. 3 overall and holding the top spot in the Big Ten. Despite the class being in its early stages, the Nittany Lions have secured several highly-ranked commitments, positioning themselves for a strong recruiting haul in 2025.

So far, James Franklin and his coaching staff have obtained three solid commitments. Two of these commits are rated as composite four-stars, while the other is a three-star prospect. Leading the class is Jaelyn Matthews, a standout player who has the potential to become a five-star recruit. Following closely is four-star running back Kiandre Barker, who recently joined the class. Additionally, the class features three-star cornerback Omari Gaines, an excellent addition to Penn State’s recruiting efforts.

Although the class is young, James Franklin has already gained considerable momentum in the 2025 recruiting cycle, setting the stage for a promising future for the Nittany Lions.
