Penn State baseball lost to Holy Cross Sunday, 11-5. On Monday, the Lions had a chance to bounce back and get retribution. They delivered, but more on that later.

No Names, All Game

Penn State baseball debuted new uniforms in this game which had the commonly chanted words ‘WE ARE’ on the front and ‘PENN STATE’ on the back, keeping with the ‘no names’ tradition in a new and creative way. In a tweet, head coach Rob Cooper thanked Athletic Director Pat Kraft for the uniforms.

Hot Bats for Penn State Baseball

Like Saturday’s dominant showing, Penn State’s offense was active immediately. After leadoff hitter Kyle Hannon reached first base via a single and advanced to second after a wild pitch, outfielder Johnny Piacentino singled to score him and put up Penn State 1-0. The scoring continued in the first inning as some of the younger players on the team got playing time. Designated hitter Jake Cooper, a redshirt freshman, hit a sacrifice fly to score Piacentino and increase the lead to 2-0. Tayven Kelley then scored after Jay Harry was caught stealing at second base.

The game would break open for the Lions in the third inning when infielder Ben Kaliher hit a grand slam, making the score 7-0. Left fielder Bobby Marsh then hit the second home run of the inning, a two-run shot that continued the streak for the Lions and increased their lead again to 9-0, capping off a six-run inning.

They would strike again in the fourth inning with an RBI double by Tayven Kelley and, as a result, increase the lead to ten runs.

Holy Cross would score its two only runs of the game when a fifth-inning double scored two runners. 10-2 Penn State.

The scoring for the Nittany Lions continued in the eighth inning when a Jack Cooper single scored Jay Harry. Thomas Bramley would then run home from a groundout to make the score 12-2 Penn State.

Tyson Cooper, redshirt junior and brother of Jake Cooper, hit a single that scored his younger brother and increased the score to 13-2.

The final two runs for Penn State would also come in the eighth inning when pinch hitter C.J. Pittaro hit a double that scored one runner and allowed one more to score due to a throwing error by the Holy Cross third baseman.

The final score ended up being 15-2 Penn State. For the time being, the new uniforms worked for Cooper’s squad. Penn State baseball plays next on Wednesday, March 8th, in their second ranked matchup of the season versus #14 North Carolina.
