State College, PA — On Saturday, Penn State took down Delaware State 15-3 to complete its first three-game series sweep of the season. After an abysmal two-week stretch where they went 2-6, the Nittany Lions are now riding a three-game winning streak.
Penn State baseball blasts Delaware State
The Nittany Lions struck first in the second inning. A throwing error by the Hornets’ second baseman sparked confusion and allowed Grant Norris to steal home. Tayven Kelley drove in another run with an RBI double, and Penn State exited the frame with an early 2-0 lead.
The Lions added more runs in the third inning off the bats of Thomas Bramley, Grant Norris, and Bobby Marsh to extend the lead to five. The onslaught continued through the middle innings. Penn State added two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to take an 11-0.
Delaware State finally responded in the sixth. Several Nittany Lion miscues, including a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch, allowed the Hornets to bring home three runs in the inning. But Penn State responded in its half of the inning with four runs, forcing a decision via the mercy rule.
Pitcher Daniel Ouderkirk picked up his second win of the season, allowing four hits and three earned runs. He also struck out four batters. Anthony Steele, who relieved Ouderkirk, pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Momentum building?
Riding a three-game winning streak, Penn State baseball plays West Virginia on Tuesday before heading to West Lafayette next weekend to take on Purdue. A disappointing 1-5 in Big Ten play and 1-6 on the road, the Lions are looking for a strong showing against the Boilermakers to keep their momentum going.
