STATE COLLEGE, PA — On Saturday night, the Penn State Nittany Lions fell just short against the 2-seed Texas Longhorns in a thrilling Round of 32 matchup. The game was just Penn State’s second NCAA tournament trip and first time advancing to the second round since 2001, and after the Lions’ loss, the official Pitt Athletics account had a quick jab for Penn State basketball. Not long after Pitt took this shot at PSU, the Panthers were blown out in their Round of 32 matchup against Xavier.
Pitt Athletics takes shot at Penn State
After Penn State’s close loss to Texas on Saturday night, the official Pitt Athletics Twitter account tweeted a “hook ’em” emoji in support of Texas basketball. Pitt’s shot was funny for two reasons:
- The last thing on Penn State fans’ minds last night was the University of Pittsburgh, which is generally irrelevant to those outside of the city.
- Not too long after Pitt celebrated Penn State’s loss, the Panthers got a bit of Karma, losing to a worse team (Xavier) by more points.
Both Penn State basketball and the Pitt Panthers were eliminated in the Round of 32 — for PSU fans, it’s clear that the program is on the rise, and there is much more to look forward to and talk about now that basketball season is over. The Nittany Lions won a wrestling national title on Saturday, Penn State’s baseball and softball teams are doing well, not to mention the upcoming 2023 football season and Penn State’s top-5 ranked men’s lacrosse team. When a bubble basketball team is all you have, I imagine it’s easy to see someone else failures as your own success.
All said and done, Xavier (3) beat Pitt (11) by 11 points on Sunday — not a great look after celebrating Penn State’s loss the night before. Pitt Athletics has since deleted the tweet, though many fans managed to capture screen shots of what the Panthers’ athletic department had to say (below).
