TULSA, OK — On Saturday, the Nittany Lions accomplished an incredible feat. For the 10th time during the Cael Sanderson era (since 2011), the Penn State wrestling team has won the NCAA team national championship. The Nittany Lions still have a few individual titles up for grabs, though the team title will be heading back to State College for the second year in a row.

Penn State wrestling wins 10th title in 12 tournaments, 11th title all-time

Since taking over as head coach in 2011, Cael Sanderson has turned Penn State wrestling into one of the most dominant programs in NCAA history across any sport. Heading into the final sessions of the NCAA tournament on Saturday, the Nittany Lions only needed one single point to clinch the national championship — just past 11:00 AM (EST), Penn State wrestling earned its point and defended its spot at the top.

The Nittany Lions can still grab a few more individual titles, though the 2022-23 season will go down as one of the most-successful years of the Cael Sanderson tenure. Throughout the season, Penn State wrestling finished with a 16-0 overall record, an 8-0 conference record, won the Big Ten title last weekend, and now, the Lions lay claim to yet another national championship.

It may be early in the day, but Penn State fans can already start the celebration knowing that their Nittany Lions are national champions yet again.
