On Tuesday, Penn State baseball took a short trip to Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers in a unique game at PNC Park, the home to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Nittany Lions desperately needed a win after being swept by Nebraska, which extended their losing streak to seven consecutive games. However, Penn State couldn’t snap the streak, losing 11-3 to Pitt in a game that essentially sounded the death knell for the Nittany Lions’ postseason hopes.

Penn State baseball extends losing streak with another embarrassing loss

Penn State got on the board first with an RBI double from Thomas Bramley that scored CJ Pittaro. But Pitt answered and then took the lead with a three-run home run in the third inning and a solo home shot in the fourth to make it a 4-1 game.

The Lions added another run in the sixth with an RBI double from Josh Spiegel that scored Johnny Piacentino. Pitt then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and another three-run home run in the seventh to make the score 11-2. The Lions mustered only one more run via an RBI single from Bobby Marsh, and ultimately lost 11-3.

Is there any hope left for the Lions?

The loss to the Panthers brought the Lions’ losing streak to a whopping eight games straight. Penn State baseball has not been able to win a game in the month of May yet. This series of losses effectively ended Penn State’s season, as the Lions will most likely not be able to make the Big Ten Tournament, which only features the top six teams in the conference. Penn State is even less likely to secure an at-large bid in the College World Series. The Lions must look long and hard to determine what went wrong in a once-promising season.

Penn State returns to State College to play its last series of the season against Maryland this week, with game one starting on Thursday. Stay tuned to Basic Blues Nation for updates on the series.
