Penn State football uniforms rank in top 5 ahead of 2023 season

In late-January of 2023, 247 Sports released their top 30 best uniforms in college football ahead of the 2023 season. Most of the top 5 teams on 247’s list reside in the Big Ten, including our own Penn State football Nittany Lions, who took the No. 5 spot in the rankings.

Penn State football ranks  in 5th rankings

Among the top 5 in the rankings are three familiar faces for the Penn State Nittany Lions: Ohio State and Michigan. The Buckeyes’ Scarlet and Grey uniforms came in at No. 1 on the list — a controversial move to say the least — followed by Michigan’s undeniably iconic winged helmet. At No. 3 on the list is the LSU Tigers, and at No. 4 is the Texas Longhorns’ burnt orange uniforms, followed by Penn State’s nameless basic blue jerseys at No. 5. Just after Penn State football is the shiny golden helmets of Notre Dame.

The only other Big Ten school listed is the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who came in at No. 29 (unless you count USC, who came in at No. 12, and UCLA, who came in at No. 16).

What 247 says about the Nittany Lions’ uniforms

Here is what Brad Crawford of 247 Sports has to say about Penn State’s traditional-yet-iconic uniforms:

“Navy and white were made for each other in terms of perfect contrast and the Nittany Lions have refused to interrupt program tradition. The familiar white helmet, blue jersey and white pants combination has been a part of Penn State history for more than a half-century, but the program has allowed for subtle variations and one-offs over the years. The program’s vertical numeral on jersey sleeves and its oval primary logo at the crest of the Nittany Lions’ current Nike look are dynamic details that set this uniform apart from others. It’s hard to place Penn State outside of the top 5 in a uniform ranking. This set is iconic.”
