This fall, for the first time since the 2018 season when Trace McSorley was at the helm, a quarterback not named Sean Clifford will get the starting nod under center. That new face will be none other than Penn State football quarterback Drew Allar, who is currently heading into his second season in the Blue and White. Recently, USA Today released its post-spring Big Ten QB rankings, and Allar managed to break into the top 5 in the Big Ten, coming in at No. 4.

The Drew Allar era has been long anticipated, and in just a few short months, it will finally arrive in full force when Penn State football kicks off its season with a night game against West Virginia. For many years now, fans have been waiting for Allar to get his chance, and frankly, I cannot blame them one bit; Drew Allar brings a huge frame, tons of talent, and the smarts to match, meaning he has all the tools to be Penn State’s next great QB.

During Allar’s true freshman season in the Blue and White, the coaching staff opted to burn his redshirt in favor of getting him more in-game playing time as the Nittany Lions’ backup QB en route to an 11-2 season, which concluded with a top 10 ranking and a Rose Bowl victory over the nation’s 8th-ranked team. In the 2022 season, Allar completed 35 of his 60 pass attempts for 344 yards, for four touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Now, heading into the 2022 season, the offense is all his, and USA Today clearly knows it. Penn State football quarterback Drew Allar came in at No. 4 in this year’s post-spring Big Ten QB rankings, behind JJ McCarthy (Michigan), Taulia Tagovailoa (Maryland), and Kyle McCord (Ohio State).

Why top-5? USA Today’s take on Drew Allar

Here is what USA Today had to say about the young Penn State football quarterback coming in at No. 4 in the Big Ten despite having never started a college football game:

“Plenty of Nittany Lions fans have been waiting for Drew Allar to get his shot at running the show. The former five-star signee will get that opportunity in 2023 after Sean Clifford was drafted into the NFL. He has the talent but there is always a learning curve when you are the starter and not just a backup coming in for mop-up duty.”
