Penn State football closed out its non-conference slate on Saturday with a commanding 52-6 win over Villanova. The FCS level competition gave the Nittany Lions ample opportunity to fine-tune their play with No. 6 Oregon coming to town on the other side of the bye week.
Defensively, the Nittany Lions defense is already beginning to round into championship form. The unit has looked as-advertised under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, allowing just 17 points over the first 180 minutes of play this season.
The Blue and White turned into another strong showing against the Wildcats, falling one play shy of the program’s first consecutive shut out performances in over a quarter century. Penn State held Villanova to an average of 2.8 yards per play while forcing its sixth and seventh turnovers on the year.
