The dust has finally started to settle on the winter transfer portal window, as players and programs across college football solidify their roster spots ahead of offseason workouts and spring practice. However, there are still a few late additions to the portal as January comes to a close, one of which impacted James Franklin and Penn State football on Thursday night. First reported by Rivals, WR and special teams contributor Mason Stahl has entered his name into the transfer portal after four seasons with the Nittany Lions.

WR Mason Stahl becomes late addition to the transfer portal

On Thursday night, Rivals reported that Penn State WR Mason Stahl had entered his name into the transfer portal. Although the winter portal window ended in early January, graduate players can still enter at any time. There is also a 30-day window for players in programs that have experienced coaching changes this offseason.

Stahl did not appear on the updated 2024 Penn State football roster released in early January. As of Friday morning, the redshirt junior has not released a statement on the decision.

Mason Stahl committed to James Franklin and Penn State football as a PWO out of Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh in the class of 2020. Originally a QB, Stahl transitioned to WR later in his Nittany Lion career. He appeared in nine games across four seasons in Happy Valley, primarily on special teams. Stahl rushed for 22 yards on three carries against Rutgers in Beaver Stadium in 2021. He played in three games last season.

Mason Stahl is the third Penn State WR to hit the transfer portal this offseason. Cristian Driver entered in December and later committed to Minnesota. Dante Cephas committed to Kansas State last week after hitting the portal following the Peach Bowl.

James Franklin and the Nittany Lions have seen seven players enter the transfer portal this offseason. Outside of Cephas, most were primarily special teams contributors.

Penn State has been particularly active in recruiting players out of the portal, officially adding six players this month. The transfer portal class is highlighted by the addition of several former five-star prospects, including WR Julian Fleming, OL Nolan Rucci, and CB AJ Harris.
