James Franklin and Penn State football are starting the week with positive news on the transfer portal front. On Sunday, the Nittany Lions landed a commitment from portal kicker Chase Meyer, formerly of Tulsa. Meyer becomes Penn State’s second transfer portal commitment of December, as the Nittany Lions will need to find a new placekicker for the 2024 season.
Penn State football lands commitment from transfer portal kicker Chase Meyer
After some early season struggles, the kicking game solidified for Penn State football once James Franklin switched to Alex Felkins in September. A second-team All-Big Ten selection, Felkins was 18-22 on field goals and 45-45 on extra points this year.
But Felkins’ eligibility is exhausted after the Peach Bowl, and even though Sander Sahaydak is expected to return for 2024, you get the sense that the Nittany Lions would like more depth at the position.
So, much like James Franklin did with Felkins, Penn State has looked to the transfer portal. Chase Meyer first popped up on the radar for a mid-week visit on December 14. Evidently liking what he saw, Meyer committed to the Nittany Lions on Sunday.
A native of Santa Ana, California, Chase Meyer started his first collegiate season in the Keystone State at Penn. He transferred to Tulsa for 2023, where he went 17-20 on field goals with a long of 47 yards this season. Meyer chose Penn State football over Oklahoma and San Diego State. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
Who else is on commitment watch?
Chase Meyer is the second transfer protal prospect to commit to Penn State football this week. The Nittany Lions landed the No. 7 ranked OL in the portal, Alan Herron, on December 11.
Of course, the name on everyone’s lips right now is Julian Fleming. The former Ohio State WR and the top-ranked player in Pennsylvania originally looked like he was trending toward Nebraska, but was crystal-balled to Penn State on Thursday.
Another name to watch is former Miami WR Colbie Young. The No. 5 WR in the transfer portal visited James Franklin and Penn State football this weekend. While he has plenty of suitors as one of the best WRs in the portal, Young previously played at Lackawanna Community College, where the Nittany Lions have had recruiting luck in the past.
