One of the reasons why the Penn State football team struggled in 2023 was due to a lack of explosive plays. Let’s be honest when Nick Singleton wasn’t breaking long runs for the Nittany Lions it was challenging to create those moments. What was even more challenging to deal with was the lack of big plays from the wide receiver room. KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Omari Evans were the only two players who stretched the defense vertically this season. Well, that could all change very quickly if James Franklin can land former Indiana Hoosier Jaylin Lucas from the transfer portal.

The same day Jaylin Lucas announced that he was entering the transfer portal to leave Indiana is the same day he announced that the Penn State football team has offered him.

Lucas is listed as a running back and return specialist but this guy is truly a Swiss army knife. Lucas finished the 2023 season at Indiana with 275 rushing yards, 247 receiving yards, and 572 return yards. He also accounted for 5 touchdowns this past season.

Although he is small in stature listed at 5’9 170 pounds, Lucas makes up for his lack of size with his speed. He could be a running back or wide receiver but he is a player that you need to get into the open space and let him go to work. On tape, he reminds me of former Penn State WR KJ Hamler. But the fact that Penn State has already offered this playmaker is a positive sign. I can only imagine what newly hired offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki could draw up if Jaylin Lucas landed in State College.
