It’s easy to commit early on in your high school career. What’s challenging is staying committed when other opportunities come knocking at the door. That’s where the lone commit in the 2026 recruiting class for Penn State football finds himself. Messiah Mickens continues to grow his national recognition, however, he continues to show his loyalty to Penn State. Now, he will return to campus this weekend to build on his relationship with James Franklin and the coaching staff.

Messiah Mickens is a five-star running back prospect in the 2026 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. Mickens made his commitment to the Penn State football team on August 19, 2023, and has not looked back since. One of the concerns that comes with a player of this level making a decision so early on is his long-term dedication to the Nittany Lions. But every chance that has potentially been in question, Mickens has backed that up with loyalty to Penn State.

Even when it was rumored that USC and Michigan were trying to flip the five-star prospect, Mickens took to social media to shut down that rumor. Now, he has informed the public that he is set for another visit to Penn State for this upcoming weekend. He was most recently on campus less than two months ago in late January.

Experts evaluate Mickens

While Messiah Mickens continues to grow his game on the field, what are the experts saying in their evaluation of this dynamic running back?

Brian Dohn of 247Sports describes Mickens’ play style as follows:

“Allows plays to develop and is able to find the hole even when the play is designed to go elsewhere. Understands how to be patient and set up blocks on the second and third level. Is a physical runner who is willing to lower shoulder and take on linebackers and defensive backs.

A willing blocker who understands the importance of and embraces blitz pickups. Already a good pass catcher who adjusts well to inaccurate throws. Lines up in the slot and comes out of the backfield in the passing game. Tracks the ball well and has soft hands. Is difficult to bring down after the catch. Is difficult for defensive backs to track down in the open field. Is a high-level Power Five prospect with high-end NFL Draft characteristics.”
