For many college football players, the recruiting process is full of highs and lows. The same could be said for Penn State football quarterback Drew Allar who went from a three-star prospect to a five-star prospect throughout his high school career. Allar has opened up about how the recruiting process was for himself in previous interviews but the other side of the story is just as interesting. That is how Mike Yurcich found Drew Allar and continued to make an effort all the way until Allar’s commitment date.

Penn State OC Mike Yurcich discusses recruiting QB Drew Allar

Recently, Penn State football offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich joined former Penn State tight end Adam Breneman on his show Next Up With Adam BrenemanThe two carried out a detailed conversation about fall camp, life as an offensive coordinator, and other topics. One of the more interesting segments was when Breneman asked Yurcich about Penn State QB Drew Allar‘s recruiting process.

Yurcich said “Watching him and being able to evaluate when they are going against a better opponent, when times are tough, when it’s down by 14 or down by 7, how are they leading their team? Do they have a likability factor to them? So all those things add up and Drew had all of those traits and I felt really good about where he was mentally.”

It’s clear it’s more than the pure skill that Yurcich is after when evaluating quarterbacks, you need to display mental toughness and leadership qualities so your teammates can rely on you when times are tough.

The desire to be great is key for Mike Yurcich

Mike Yurcich continued to speak with Breneman and it’s clear that Penn State has a special group of players in 2023.

“The desire part is huge, how much do they love the game of football? And I’m in an awesome room right now with all of our quarterbacks it’s just incredible. But that’s a huge part of it evaluating the drive and the want to and he heart, and how important it is to them to become great” Yurcich said.

It’s one thing when your starting quarterback can have that determination to continue to get better, but when you put a group of players in the same QB room that has the same mindset, that’s when a team can go special places. Constant growth and competition are key for the young Penn State QBs so they can continue to develop under Mike Yurcich.
