Kyron Hudson ‘sets the tone’ for Penn State receiver room

Kyron Hudson flashed in his Penn State football debut, but his maturity has been felt around the Nittany Lions locker room since he arrived in January.

For the first time in what feels like a long time, Penn State football showed signs of life in its wide receiver room during last weekend’s 46-11 win over Nevada. For at least one week, the Nittany Lions’ offseason transfer portal acquisitions paid off with standout performances from Kyron Hudson and Trebor Peña.

While Peña was at the top of the stat line in terms of receptions, it’s been Hudson who has garnered the most attention coming out of Week 1. Nabbing six passes for 89 yards and a touchdown – and almost hauling in another score – the former USC Trojan showed his confidence and composure with several highlight reel-worthy plays.

Preparing like a pro, Hudson “sets the tone” for Penn State wide receivers

Hudson’s maturity has provided a stabilizing force to a Nittany Lions receiver room that has seen its share of turbulence in recent years.

“He’s got an innate ability to connect with his teammates and coaches,” Penn State receivers coach Marques Hagans said Thursday. “He sets the tone by being on top of details, knowing his assignments, and showing up to work every day prepared as if he’s a pro.

“So, he’s fun to be around on and off the field. I’m really grateful that we have him and [I have] the opportunity to be his coach.”

The fifth-year veteran has quickly immersed himself in the Nittany Lions’ culture since arriving in Happy Valley earlier this year.

“He’s always talking to the defensive guys, guys on special teams, specialists,” Hagans said. “If you watch him, he’s just always moving around the team, and not a lot of people have that ability. But he does. And I bet if you went around and asked a lot of guys on the team, they would say the same thing as well.”

Hudson and the rest of the Penn State receivers will have a chance to impress again on Saturday against FIU, a team that allowed 241 yards through the air to Bethune-Cookman in Week 1. The Nittany Lions and Panthers will kick things off inside Beaver Stadium at noon.
