Penn State football icon Trace McSorley had another opportunity to keep his NFL career alive this summer. On Sunday night in the last preseason game of 2024, he made a strong argument to be kept on a roster this fall. The ex-Nittany Lion, McSorley is currently playing for the Washington Commanders and showcased his talents on national TV Sunday evening.

Trace McSorley didn’t have the luxury of attending OTA’s and other off-season activities. He was signed to the Washington Commanders preseason roster ahead of the team’s second preseason game against the Dolphins. The former Penn State football icon was thrown into game action just days later.

He played well for being thrown into the fire completing 11 passes for 93 yards. But after a week’s worth of practice, McSorley showcased his skills on Sunday Night Football on NBC against the Patriots on Sunday night.

In his second preseason game in 2024, McSorley completed 12 of 25 passes for 125 yards and 1 touchdown pass. The former Nittany Lion also added 40 rushing yards on four carries including running over a defender.

There is something special about the way that Trace McSorley continues to fight for his NFL career. Just when you think it’s coming to an end McSorley puts in another strong performance. This summer, he just needed an opportunity to showcase that he was still capable.

Prior to his signing by the Commanders, McSorley was back in Happy Valley working with Brad Maendler, Drew Allar, and Ethan Grunkemeyer this summer on his mechanics. He spent last season on various practice squads in the league, most recently with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Over the next 24 hours, NFL teams will start to trim down their rosters to 53 players; some will be cut, and their dream of playing in the league will end. For roughly 500 other players, they will start the season on the practice squad.
