Penn State quarterback Drew Allar prepares to throw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Theo Johnson in the second half of an NCAA football game against Indiana at Beaver Stadium Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, in State College, Pa. The Nittany Lions won, 33-24.

There are a few analysts in the college football world who have faith in Penn State football. They give Penn State fans a reason to be optimistic before each season which is refreshing considering how many are not like this. Kirk Herbstreit and Joel Klatt are two who stand out as popular analysts who have Penn State’s back before each season. Now, ahead of the 2024 season, Klatt has released his way too early top 10 teams and he has the Nittany Lions in that conversation. But his reason why he believes in James Franklin and Drew Allar is interesting.

FOX Analyst believes Penn State football is a top 10 team in 2024

Every year it feels like the Penn State football team is so close to taking that next step. But in 2024 it’s now or never. The Nittany Lions have had consistent finishes within the top 10 of the College Football Playoff rankings. If they can stay consistent they should be able to reach the postseason that Nittany Nation has waited for. Joel Klatt explained in his Way Too Early Top-10 Rankings for the 2024 season why he thinks Penn State has a legit playoff shot in 2024.

Klatt said, “For two years now I was talking about this class that was true sophomores now juniors that are going to be formidable, to say the least. This was one of James Franklin‘s best recruiting classes that are about to be juniors so here go. This is a team more than any team in the country that is excited for the 12-team format. See they never made the 4-team playoff as you know but in a hypothetical, if you go back and overlay the 12-team format over what just happened in the last decade in college football Penn State would’ve made 6 playoffs if we would’ve had the 12-team setup. That’s the most of any team that didn’t make a playoff… ”

It’s up to the 2022 recruiting class

The players who are entering their junior year in 2024 have a lot of weight on their shoulders this season. Joel Klatt explained how important that core group is to success next season.

Klatt said, “That talented class in 2022 that I was talking about they’re all going to be true juniors. Drew Allar the quarterback, Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, and Abdul Carter the linebacker. These guys are really good players.”
