Results are the only thing that matters in college football. Unfortunately, if your results are not improving, then someone has to take the blame. That’s where former Penn State football assistant Sean Spencer has found himself. This week, the news broke that Spencer was released from his duties with the Florida Gators. He held the role of co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach and was with the Gators for two seasons. Now, the former James Franklin assistant will be looking for work elsewhere.

Former Penn State football assistant loses role in the SEC

Sean Spencer has been coaching college football since 1996. He has become one of the most prolific coaches in the sport, and he is known for being an excellent recruiter and a developer of defensive linemen. He coached for James Franklin and the Penn State football team from 2014-2019.

Spencer helped the Nittany Lions lead the country in sacks in 2015 and 2018, respectively. But Monday, it was first reported by Edgar Thompson that the Florida Gators would part ways with Sean Spencer and Corey Raymond. The Florida Gators allowed 38.5 points per game in 2023.

Would Penn State want Spencer back?

The question that has been looming since the news broke is would Penn State want Sean Spencer back? As of right now, the answer is no. Deion Barnes has exceeded expectations in the recruiting world and with his on-field development. There is no reason to bring back someone when that role is already flourishing in State College in my opinion.
