After the Penn State football team fell to Michigan Wolverines, the expectation is for the Nittany Lions to slip in the College Football Playoff rankings. After another disappointing performance in a big game, the Nittany Lions sit at 8 wins and 2 losses in 2023. Their best win of the season was against the Iowa Hawkeyes, who did not appear in last week’s edition of the College Football Playoff Top 25. But at this point, the team is playing for a potential New Year’s Six Bowl game and looking toward 2024.

Penn State football slips in the CFP ranking after Michigan loss

The Penn State football team entered last week as the No. 10 team in the CFP rankings, but that has significantly changed after Saturday’s loss. From a resume standpoint, it’s hard to argue why Penn State should be higher in the ranking.

Now, the week 12 CFP ranking has been released late last night, and the Penn State Nittany Lions fell to the No. 12 ranking. A significant fall in terms of postseason expectations, as Penn State is sitting on the cusp of a New Year’s Six Bowl berth.

The lack of ranked wins is hurting the Nittany Lions this season. Their two losses are against the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the CFP poll this season. Penn State football will look to get back on track on Saturday against Rutgers.

In the Big Ten, everything will come down to the last Saturday of the season when Ohio State and Michigan collide. Both teams look like they are capable of winning a national championship this year, but with 8 teams realistically in the hunt for the College Football Playoff, these last two weeks will be crucial for the postseason.
