As Penn State football is gearing up for a Big Ten Championship appearance and playoff run, Nittany Lions offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki may become the target of many now-vacant college programs. According to reports surfacing this weekend, the West Virginia Mountaineers are first among them.

Mike Asti of WV Sports Now reported Sunday evening that Kotelnicki is an emerging target for the newly opened West Virginia head coaching position. Per Asti’s report, Kotelnicki “expects to be interviewed” for the Mountaineers’ top job.

According to reports on Sunday, West Virginia is set to fire Neal Brown after six seasons and a 37-35 record with the Mountaineers.

Coming to Happy Valley by way of Kansas this offseason, Andy Kotelnicki helped to revive what was a faltering Nittany Lions offense from a year ago. Penn State football finishes the regular season ranked in the top 25 in total offense (No. 19) and rushing offense (No. 25). The Nittany Lions were 30th and 40th in scoring and passing offense, respectively.

Perhaps the most problematic issue for Penn State from 2023 was the lack of big plays offensively. Kotelnicki did his part to turn that issue around.

Coming into Saturday’s contest with Maryland, the Nittany Lions ranked No. 6 nationally in explosive play percentage on offense. However, the offense still struggled producing chunk yardage at times, only coming up seven plays of 10+ yards in Penn State’s only loss of the year to Ohio State.

Penn State football will face Oregon in the 2024 Big Ten Championship at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
