With National Signing Day in the review mirror, Penn State football can focus on the 2024 recruiting class adjusting to college. In just a few weeks several true freshmen will step foot on campus as early enrollees. But the road ahead will be challenging for these players. They need to adjust to winter conditioning, college classes, and college life in general. Now, imagine all of that but not being able to play just yet. That’s where star defensive lineman Liam Andrews will find himself. James Franklin addressed the media in regards to which position he sees Andrews playing at Penn State and his injury status.

According to On3, Liam Andrews will enroll early in a few weeks joining the Penn State football team. Andrews was a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 2 player in Massachusetts according to 247Sports. However, he will have to wait a few months before being in a position to contribute and fight for playing time next season. James Franklin addressed the media on National Signing Day.

Franklin alluded to Andrew dealing with a minor injury. Franklin said, “Now it was just a position thing we had to work through. We’re excited about him. He’s got some bumps and bruises he’s working through right now but hopefully, we’ll get him rehabbing and in a position to be able to compete by the time summer camp comes around.”

What position will Andrews play at Penn State?

It was tricky to follow this summer, but there was a genuine debate on recruiting sites about which position fits Liam Andrews. He has the ability to play both the offensive line and defensive line, but the area of need and path to playing time would be the defensive line.

James Franklin expressed where Andrews would start his Penn State career. He said, “We were recruiting him hard, as an offensive lineman, and thought he had a chance to be special as an offensive lineman. But I think you guys know with us, we are an under-promise, over-deliver program and I’m not going to tell a guy what he wants to hear to get him here and then switch it with other alternative motives or agendas, we are not going to that.

When we decided to say, hey, we are going to take you as a defensive lineman, if I’m remembering the timeline correctly, Deion [Barnes] was able to go see him work out, whether it was off-campus, at like a New England showcase or whether it was here, and we legitimately felt like this guy has a chance to be a special defensive lineman.”
