The theme with the transfer portal and Penn State athletics has been reopening past relationships. The Penn State basketball team has a chance to bring back one of its former commitments who ended up following Micah Shrewsberry to Notre Dame. Carey Booth has officially entered the transfer portal. Will Mike Rhoades point to his father, Calvin Booth, and his legacy with the Nittany Lions to bring him back to Happy Valley?

Former commit, son of Penn State legend enters transfer portal

Carey Booth would’ve been an instant impact player for the Penn State basketball team with years to develop. Many Nittany Lion fans were excited to see him suit up in Happy Valley. But of course, in today’s era of college basketball situations change so quickly.

Booth was a member of the 2023 recruiting class. According to 247Sports, he was the 55th overall prospect in the class and the No. 2 player in New Hampshire coming out of high school. Booth took an official visit to Penn State in June of 2022 and committed in August. He went on to sign his letter of intent in November. However, it was short-lived. On March 23, 2023, Booth decommitted from Penn State. It happened to be the same day Micah Shrewsberry was officially hired as the next head coach at Notre Dame.

He went on to commit to and play for the Fighting Irish this past season. Carey Booth accounted for 6.4 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game. Now, Joe Tipton of On3 has announced that Booth has entered the transfer portal but will consider returning to Notre Dame.

Can his father’s tie to Penn State bring him back?

While time has passed the area that Mike Rhoades needs to approach if the Nittany Lions reach out to Booth is his father’s legacy. Calvin Booth currently serves as the General Manager for the Denver Nuggets who won an NBA Championship last season. They are also the same team that selected former Penn State basketball star Jalen Pickett in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Booth played for the Nittany Lions from 1995 until 1999. He went on to be named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year during his junior year. Calvin Booth was drafted by the Washington Wizards in the 1999 NBA Draft. He played 10 years in the NBA before working his way into front-office roles and eventually assembling an NBA Championship team.
