Penn State basketball battling Micah Shrewsberry for transfer portal target

Throughout the past several Penn State basketball seasons finding reliable post players has been challenging. Whether it be at power forward or center the Nittany Lions have struggled to recruit and maintain dominate play on the block. That has hurt the team in terms of offensive rebounds and a true rim protector. This past season Qudus Wahab was very solid on the low block for the Nittany Lions. But now, Mike Rhoades will need to look at the transfer portal to fill this need on the low block, with former UMass forward Josh Cohen scheduled to visit Happy Valley shortly. Rhoades will have to fend off ex-Nittany Lion head coach Micah Shrewsberry for this prospect.

The Penn State basketball will likely look very different during the 2024-2025 season. It will be the third season in a row with a vastly different roster from the previous season. The Nittany Lions have lost four scholarship players to the transfer portal themselves. Leaving Mike Rhoades no choice but to dip back into the portal to restructure his roster.

One target will be former UMass forward Josh Cohen who according to Joe Tipton of On3 is scheduled to take an unofficial visit to Penn State soon. Before Penn State Cohen will visit Arkansas, Notre Dame, and Xavier before coming to Happy Valley. Mike Rhoades will get his chance to pull a recruit away from former Nittany Lions head coach Micah Shrewsberry at Notre Dame if they can land Cohen.

In the world of college basketball, experience matters, and Josh Cohen brings that element to the table. Cohen stands at 6 foot 10 and is a native of Lincroft, NJ. During this past season for the UMass Minutemen, he averaged 15.9 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. He also shot 34% from beyond the arc.
